Emergency replacement of I-35W bridge over the Mississippi River on a fast-track design/build schedule. The new modern concrete bridge features spans of 330’-504’ (over the Mississippi River)-242’-147’. This bridge uses high strength concrete, multiple levels of redundancy and smart bridge technology. The elegant arching shapes, curved piers and white color create a bridge that fits in harmony with the surrounding site.

GM2's Complex Bridge staff provided project management for the replacement bridge project, as well as design for the new bridge, while also overseeing all aesthetic elements of the project. GM2 Complex Bridge staff and team members were on site, co-located with the Contractor and Mn/DOT to achieve the schedule, provide assistance during construction, and provide construction engineering and inspection services.

The bridge represents the first use in the United States of Light Emitting Diode (LED) highway lighting. Innovative self-cleaning concrete was used to create 30’ tall gateway sculptures, 3 rippling forms inspired by the universal symbol for water, that announce the river crossing. Close coordination of the design/build team led to successful completion of this project ahead of schedule and under budget, achieving Mn/DOT’s vision for quality, innovation, and safety. There were no lost time accidents on the project.
