Key Facts:
The East Broadway Streetscape and Traffic Improvement is a revitalization project aimed at increasing pedestrian activity for this urban arterial that connects Route 28 to Sullivan Square. This project is a classic “Road Diet” project, reducing the number of travel lanes from four to two and redistributing the available right-of-way more equitably for all users; motor vehicles, mass transit, bicycles and pedestrians.
As a Complete Streets project, sidewalk widths were increased providing a friendlier environment for pedestrians walking to and from Sullivan Square. With the wider sidewalks, many restaurants and cafes have opened. Additionally, lighting and pedestrian amenities such as benches, bike racks, and trash receptacles were added to the spacious sidewalk. The removal of the travel lane also afforded the opportunity to provide a buffered bicycle lane along the entire project, creating a safer biking experience for all. Bus stops were also upgraded and enhanced.
