This 7,291’ long concrete cable-stayed bridge carries four lanes of traffic over the Mobile River with twin parallel box girders. The cable-stayed structure is 1,500’ long, including the 780’ main span. The bridge provides a horizontal clearance of 600' and vertical clearance of 140' for the navigation channel.
During Hurricane Katrina in 2005, a 13,000-ton oil platform in drydock in Mobile Bay broke loose and impacted the 7,291’ long concrete segmental cable-stayed bridge. The oil platform damaged several areas, including pier protection cells, main span pier footings, main span pier substructure, main span bearings, main span superstructure, pylon, and cable stays. The GM2 Complex Bridge Team inspected the main span structure to assess the damage, developed all the repair procedures (design, plans, and specifications), developed contract documents, reviewed shop drawings and submittals submitted by the Contractor, and performed full construction engineering inspection services during the field repairs. All repairs were completed, and the bridge was able to fully open to traffic ahead of schedule.
