Saugatuck Island can only be accessed by Harbor Road bridge or Canal Road, which was prone to flooding. The existing bridge, not capable of carrying truck traffic, would frequently cut off the island from emergency access. GM2’s design was comprised of a shallow, 28-inch deep, 96-foot single span galvanized steel girder superstructure, composite with a concrete deck supported directly on semi-integral permanent steel sheet piling abutments that serve as substructure and seawall.

The 3.5-mile, multiuse and multimodal South Bay Harbor Trail (SBHT) connects the Ruggles MBTA station and the nearby neighborhoods to the Boston Harbor waterfront at Fan Pier.

A corridor survey was prepared which carefully included open space, traffic equipment, private property and public agency concerns in a corridor subject to frequent changes driven by the Central Artery Project. The trail uses existing roadway right of way and Chapter 91 access ways while connecting to many destination points. This includes Ruggles and Broadway T stations, the Crosstown Development, Fan Pier Development, the Children’s Museum and Federal Court House.

Although corridor conditions are extremely urban, designers used established trail design criteria for the length of the trail. This includes novel wayfinding features such as using retired US Coast Guard buoys as guideposts to reflect the coastal nature of the trail, as well as lighting improvements to illuminate the trail using city standard acorn lighting.

Wakefield High School is currently in the process of evaluating a variety of conceptual designs for the development of the new campus. GM2 has completed the existing conditions survey for approximately 30 Acres and produce base mapping to provide a canvas for the conceptual designs. GM2’s traffic and transportation engineers have developed an existing condition report and evaluated the roadway network and traffic patterns on all roadways and entrances to the school. GM2 will continue to develop a complete TIAS with recommendations for improvements. As part of the transportation scope GM2 will provide conceptual designs for the intersection of Nahant Street Farm Street and Hemlock Road.
